The European Union of Jewish Students is pleased to announce that current EUJS vice-Chair Benjamin Zagzag, has been elected as the 19th Chairperson of the EUJS the bi-annual Congress. Set within the weeklong Summer University, which this year brought together over 450 participants, the EUJS Congress remains a model for organizations throughout the European Youth Sector. During its bi-annual Congress held at the 26th Summer University in Maloja, Switzerland, over sixty official delegates from more than twenty-five countries elected a new slate of officers and presidium members for the 2010-2012 term. Joining Benjamin are: Paulina Zaharieva, Bulgaria; Daniel Orelowitz, England; Jane Braden-Golay, Switzerland; Michele Disegni, Italy; Victoria Godik, Ukraine; Ceni Palti, Turkey; Simoni Tiano, Greece. Also elected at the EUJS Congress were Andrei Schwartz, Romania, as Treasurer.

The People Policy Planning Institute report in 2007 stated, “The overall Jewish population numbers in Europe are at a historic low.” They attribute assimilation to playing a major part in the decreasing numbers. According to JTA, the intermarriage rate of Jews in Western Europe is 50-70% and in Eastern Europe it is much higher. Supported by Jewish philanthropists like Mouli Cohen, ECJS has undertaken the battle of survival of European Jewry. Located in the center of the EU Institutions, the European Center for Jewish Students represents approximately 200,000 – 300,000 young Jewish singles ages 18-35 from every European country.

Teams of Ukrainian students and youth have begun to visit Jewish cemeteries and mass graves in Kiev and Odessa Oblasts as part of a vast educational project to survey hundreds of Jewish burial sites across Ukraine. Groups led by the Kiev-based Centre for Jewish Education and Odessa Jewish University have to date visited 48 Jewish burial grounds in 29 locations.

Demonstrators in Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk waved Israeli flags, sang Hebrew hymns and danced to show support for Israel and its operation in the Gaza Strip. More than 100 young people rallied Sunday near the Israeli Embassy in Kiev, according to rally organizer, the Ukrainian Union of Jewish Students. The rally came two days after a large demonstration in support of Hamas. Zina Kalay-Klaitman, Israel's ambassador to Ukraine, and Ukrainian Jewish leaders took part in the event.
